Homemade Crispy Onion Rings

Word of caution. These homemade crispy onion rings are addicting! Prepare yourself to eat more than just one onion ring, but to be utterly and completely satisfied. These are so good and perfectly crispy with every bite! We don’t make these all that often because it really is a process, but it is so worth it! Especially if you are gonna serve it with a homemade hamburger like ours (which you should check out next!) or serve is by itself with our homemade copycat Chick Fil A sauce!

Oh man I am getting excited just thinking about how amazing these are! Next time you have friends come over to have a little bbq, whip these on up and I promise you everyone will love these! And a little tip to help you out, if you have an outdoor stove top, probably on your grill, fry these onion rings outside! It will save your home from filling up with grease smell!

So here is how you make the onion rings:

  1. Rinse the onion and cut into 1/4 inch rings.
  2. Separate the rings from each other. Set aside smaller rings to save for another dish.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika in a large bowl.
  4. Coat each onion ring in the flour mixture and set aside.
  5. Combine the remaining flour mixture that you coated the onions with, with the buttermilk and egg until no lumps remain.
  6. Coat each onion ring in the wet mixture and shake away the excess.
  7. Coat each onion ring in the panko bread crumbs in a separate bowl.
  8. Fry the onion rings in a fryer or large pot with oil over medium heat or until the oil registers between 350°-375°.
  9. Flip each onion once it has changed colors and pull out with a strainer and put on a plate with paper towels to cool off.
  10. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

So it is a labor of love during the process, but it doesn’t take that long to make these! So dang good! I am excited for you all to try them and for these to become a must have whenever burgers are on the menu!

Notes

1. To get the perfect temperature of oil, it is important to gage the degrees with a thermometer. If you don't have a thermometer, heat up the oil over medium heat and when a crumb dropped into the oil boils when dropped in, the oil is ready. --- 2. We love using panko bread crumbs with onion rings because it gives the rings a nice crunch. However, bread crumbs will work perfectly fine too! --- 3. The batter when the milk has been added to it should be runny but thick, like pancake batter. Add more buttermilk if needed. --- 5. If you don't have buttermilk, milk is a perfect substitute.
