Homemade Mint Juleps

A mason Jar with a silver straw filled with homemade Mint Julep.

Since Disneyland is shut down currently with all the craziness going on in the world right now, we needed a little reminder of one of our favorite vacation spots. We searched around for some dishes from the happiest place on earth and remembered we actually made this copycat version of a Disneyland Mint Julep drink for my sister’s wedding a few years back and how tasty they turned out. My sister had a Disney inspired wedding and this is one of her favorite things to grab when visiting the park.

It is crazy easy to make and tastes so good. It has the perfect amount of lime flavor from the lemonade, and mint from the fresh mint and Creme de Menthe syrup. Then pour it in to a tall clear glass or mason jar with some ice and a straw, and let the wonderful Disney memories pour in as you enjoy this perfectly sweet drink. And side note, if you like copy cat recipes like this one, try our homemade Chick Fil A sauce. I swear it tastes the exactly the same as the real thing!

Fun fact about this drink as well, unlike myself and most, this drink did not originate from Disneyland. It actually the official drink for the Kentucky Derby and have been served at Churchill Downs on race day since 1938. We have never been to the Kentucky Derby but I can imagine wearing a big outlandish hat and carrying around a glass of homemade Mint Juleps would make you feel super fancy!

Anyway, Kentucky derby or not, this mint Julep drink is super delicious and such a fun twist to your typical lemonade drink. We even used this to sell at my kids Lemonade stand this past weekend and it was a huge hit! So give this fun drink a try, and comment below to tell us what you think!

  • 1- 1 1/2 cups simple syrup
  • 3-4 TBLS Creme de Menthe syrup
  • Sprigs of mint for drink decoration, optional
  • Maraschino Cherry for drink decoration, optional
  • Simple Syrup: equal parts white sugar and water

2

Grind up one small bunch (usually comes in a small package or about 5-6 sprigs) of mint leaves in a molcajete or mortar and pestle until well mashed.

3

Leave 1 large sprig of mint for decoration.

4

Mix thawed limeade, lemonade, and simple syrup (to taste) until well combined.

5

Then add 3-4 tablespoons Creme de Menthe syrup, til you get the desired aquamarine color and taste, then put the ground up mint leaves in and mix.

6

Refrigerate or pour over ice and serve with fresh mint and/or maraschino cherry. Can refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Notes

1. Simple syrup can be made before hand and store up to 3 weeks in the fridge or longer in the freezer. Or you can purchase simple syrup pre made at the store. --- 2. Crucial to have fresh mint for this recipe and Creme De Menthe as well. --- 3. Creme de Menthe might be hard to find at the store, so you can order some off amazon for fairly cheap. See our link in the recommended products to find it on amazon! --- 4. Orange slices also are a great drink decoration too. --- 5. Both the simple syrup and Creme de Menthe should be added to taste. Too much Creme de Menthe will make you drink taste like toothpaste! So add with caution!
